MATCH REPORT
The first league match of the 2021 season resulted in an entertaining 8-8 draw between local rivals Portsmouth Warriors and Southampton Lager.

After 18 months without a league game (due to the cancellation of the 2020/21 season due to covid) the return of waterpolo fixtures was greatly welcomed, beginning the season with an away match against local rivals Soton, the Portsmouth squad boasted 3 debutantes.

An unexpected fire alarm delayed the start of the match by half an hour before proceedings were able to get underway and Portsmouth made a lightning start scoring 3 quick goals without reply. Southampton settled and recovered a little just before the first break. Q1: Southampton 2 – 4 Portsmouth
The second quarter was far less open as both teams found their rhythm, the warriors just managed to edge the quarter and extended their lead slightly going into half time thanks to 2 late goals from debutant Francesco and Tim P. Q2: Southampton 3 – 6 Portsmouth
Tim P’s inspiring words of wisdom led to a successive third quarter with goals from another debutant Millan and captain Trevor. Followed up with some excellent defending from Mark and shot stopping by Adam in goal Portsmouth finished the third quarter in a strong position Q3: Southampton 4 – 8 Portsmouth
The final quarter Portsmouth were left to rue missed opportunities and a high qualify performance from the Southampton keeper. After being put under pressure, Southampton were able to grab an equaliser in the last play of the game, FT: Q4: Southampton 8 – 8 Portsmouth
Disappointing to miss out on the win but warriors demonstrated a strong performance especially for a first competitive match in a long time and will strive to take the win on the Home leg. Coach Trevor will be pleased with the strength in depth with 8 different scorers, and if the warriors can perform to that level consistently then they will surely have a successful season!
